Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has given youths illegally owning firearms in Nairobi 30 days to surrender them to the police.
Speaking in a press briefing on Monday, November 14, after meeting with Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Koome said that there were some youths who were ready to surrender their fire arms.
He maintained that any criminal in the city will be dealt with as a criminal, adding that there will be no politics in the police sector.
“Gavana amesema kuna vijana kadhaa wanatuma ujumbe kwake wakimueleza wako na bunduki na wangependa kupeana kwa polisi. Tumekubaliana kwa huu mkutano wetu leo, hao vijana tumewapatia mwezi mmoja. Hiyo bunduki uko nayo yenye unasumbua nayo wananchi irudishe kwetu,” Koome stated.

The police IG said that criminals terrorizing city residents will be dealt with conclusively, even as he maintained that police officers had been trained on the circumstances under which they are allowed to use their firearms.
Koome added that the police were going to use all means at their disposal to address robbery with violence as it is a capital offence.
On his part, Sakaja said that Nairobi County will cooperate with the police to restore sanity and order in the city.
"We have agreed on a number of issues that need to be sorted out. We seek to have a city of order and dignity hope and opportunities. We will cooperate with the NPS," Sakaja stated.
