The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has officially taken over the chairmanship of the Inter-Regional Economic Communities (RECs) Coordination Platform.
According to a statement dated Friday, February 14, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu assumed the role of President of the ECOWAS Commission Dr. Omar Alieu Touray who served as chair for the 2024-2025 period.
In expressing gratitude for Touray’s leadership, IGAD noted his significant contributions to strengthened coordination and engagement among RECs.
"IGAD expresses its deep appreciation for Dr. Touray’s leadership and commitment during his tenure, which strengthened coordination and engagement among RECs," the statement read.

Following the takeover, IGAD listed its priorities which include harnessing digital technology and artificial intelligence to foster economic growth and resilience across the continent.
IGAD emphasized its commitment to collaborating with fellow RECs to maximize such innovations for sustainable development.
Additionally, IGAD revealed plans to engage closely with the incoming African Union Commission in a bid to enhance regional influence.
"IGAD will actively engage with the incoming African Union Commission ensuring that RECs continue to to play a strategic role in AU decision-making. The platform will serve as a mechanism to strengthen Africa's institutional architecture and collective decision-making processes," the statement added.
Further, IGAD reaffirmed its open-door policy, inviting all RECs and regional mechanisms to participate in a spirit of openness, dialogue, and shared ambition.
The organization highlighted that enhanced collaboration among regional bodies is crucial for addressing Africa’s shared challenges and maximizing growth opportunities.
Lastly, IGAD emphasized its dedication to the principles of Pan-Africanism, aiming to strengthen regional unity and advocate for a more integrated and prosperous Africa.
"IGAD remains fully committed to the principles of Pan-Africanism, reinforcing regional unity and advocating for more integrated, peaceful and prosperous Africa that speaks with one voice on the global stage," the statement further read.
