The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced changes to how individual users access its iTax platform, introducing the use of National Identity Card (ID) numbers as a new login option.
In a statement released on Monday, August 4, the tax agency said the move is part of ongoing efforts to simplify tax processes and improve service delivery.
“In a major step toward improving service delivery and encouraging tax compliance, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced the use of National Identity Card (ID) numbers as a new login option for individual users on the iTax platform,” the Authority said in a media brief.
Previously, individuals could only access iTax services using their Personal Identification Number (PIN). While this option remains operational, KRA said the addition of the ID number is meant to make the platform more user-friendly and accessible.
“The decision to implement this option was driven by feedback from taxpayers who noted that ID numbers are easier to remember and more frequently used in everyday identification processes,” the Authority noted.

KRA added that the change aligns with its customer-centric approach to tax administration and is part of broader reforms aimed at modernizing Kenya’s tax system.
“By offering an option that aligns with users’ preferences and habits, KRA hopes to reduce friction in accessing services and promote greater uptake of digital tax services," the statement read.
Individual and corporate taxpayers use the iTax platform to file returns, make payments, and apply for tax compliance certificates, among other functions. KRA says enhancing its access will help increase voluntary compliance.
“This development is a significant step toward removing barriers that discourage voluntary compliance,” the Authority stated. “KRA will continue to listen to taxpayers and make changes that reflect their needs and experiences.”
