Journey to the top

Sudi, the son of a charcoal dealer, was born in 1980 to squatter parents. He lived with his family at the farm of Mzee Kibor arap Talai in the Moi University area in Kesses.

Mzee Talai allowed them to live on his farm. His mother was jobless and his father dealt in charcoal to provide for the family all while educating him and his siblings.

His father would later help his mother set up a groceries business at Moi University. Sudi also owned a bicycle at the time and would help his father distribute the charcoal.

Growing up around the Moi University stage, Sudi became friends with matatu operators, especially conductors, and in no time, he began touting. He would earn Ksh800 per month, and due to his honesty, he was rewarded with a pay rise, and started earning Ksh1,200.

After turning 18 in 1998, Sudi acquired a driving licence and became a matatu driver. On the side, he carried out farming on a seven-acre piece of land.

In 2000, he bought a Peugeot 504 and operated it as a matatu.

A visit to Nairobi in 2000 introduced him to the gambling business. Sudi acquired 2 pool tables and took them to Moi University where he set up the business. He would later acquire five more tables and spread them across various towns within Uasin Gishu.

He operated his pool business alongside his matatu business. He later sold the matatu and bought a Toyota saloon car and a pick up which he used to operate his businesses.

While buying his Mazda Pick Up, Sudi grew curious and ended up in the motor vehicle dealership business.

He met incumbent Kericho governor Paul Chepkwony in Mombasa where he was a lecturer at the time. He linked Sudi to David Lagat, a businessman who operated a clearing and forwarding company. And that is how Sudi, started selling cars.

The lawmaker recalls that at the peak of his business, he lost Ksh11 million to cons and was forced to sell his properties, and took up a Ksh400,000 loan to keep his business afloat.

It is through Lagat met powerful people in the country including, DP Ruto, who was Eldoret North MP at the time.

The 2010 Constitution birthed Kapseret Constituency after it was hived of Eldoret South, and Sudi was elected MP in 2013 on United Republican Party (URP) ticket.

Since Sudi has not slowed down, his popularity has continued to grow.
