Drama as Speeding Car Plunges into Indian Ocean

The Makupa Causeway in Mombasa was on Wednesday a dramatic scene after a car ferrying two passengers plunged into the Indian Ocean.

The car; a Toyota Vitz ferrying a woman and her son was reportedly moving from Changamwe to Mombasa Island before it plunged into the ocean.

Following the accident, one of the occupants (the boy) managed to swim to safety while her mother remained in the car where she was rescued by divers.

"The car was moving at a high speed. I saw it heading towards Mombasa Island and all of a sudden I saw it in the ocean. I rushed to rescue the occupants," Mr Omar Chigamba, one of the first responders told a local daily.

According to Chigamba, the lady was not in good shape at the time of the rescue since she was strapped on her belt.

She was rushed to Coast General Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, cases of vehicles plunging into the Indian Ocean have been on the rise over the past year.

In December 2019, a vehicle with one occupant plunges into the ocean barely three months after Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu died after their car slid from a ferry and plunged into the ocean.
