Some casualties are still trapped inside wreckage of the truck which was ferrying bags of cement.

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced several measures to curb unending road carnages at the Londiani Junction, Kericho county.

On Friday, June 30, about 49 people were confirmed dead after a heavy truck lost control and hit on pedestrians.

It also rammed into a couple of other vehicles on the side of the road.

The CS toured the scene on the morning of Saturday, July 1.

Addressing a presser, Murkomen said the state was contemplating removing hawkers and other small-scale traders along the highway.

Kileleshwa representative in the Nairobi County Assembly Robert Alai had also pointed out to the hawking business on highways as a contributing factor to the many accidents.

"I wonder why we have made it normal for people trade in the middle of the road?

Just like building permanent home near the road, trading near a road is a serious risk. We have normalised it everywhere. It kills many but we seem not to care," said Alai.

Some casualties are still trapped inside the trailer which still has its freight on board.
