The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has recommended former Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria and seven former county officials to be charged with procurement irregularities of Sh 140 Million.
In a statement of Saturday, April 13 evening, the ODPP said the irregularities were committed between 2014 and 2016.
According to ODPP, an investigation conducted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) revealed that there was a conflict of interest in the award of publicity tenders by the County Government of Murang'a to Top Image Media Consultancy Ltd and Value View Limited.
“Mwangi Wa Iria, Patrick Kagumu Mukuria, Jane Wanjiru Mbuthia, David Maina Kiama, David Maina Njeri, Jane Waigwe Kimani, Solomon Mutura Kimani, Peter Muturi Karanja, were found to have engaged in procurement irregularities in the award of publicity tenders to Top Image Media Consultants Limited and Value View Limited,” read the statement in part.

The ODPP recommended Wa Iria and his co-accused be charged with Conspiracy to commit an offense of corruption contrary to section 47A (3) as read with section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act (ACECA), abuse of office, and unlawful acquisition of public property Contrary to Section 45 of the ACECA.
Other charges leveled against the nine suspects include; conflict of interest contrary to Section 42(3) as read with Section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act 2003, dealing with suspect property Contrary to Section 47(1) and 47(2) (a) and Money Laundering contrary to Section 3 as read with Section 16 of the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.
Wa Iria is the second Azimio-allied former governor to be charged with corruption charges after ex-Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.
