Azimio leader Raila Odinga is eyeing the AUC chairmanship post.

The African Union has disclosed that the deadline for submitting the names of candidates vying for leadership positions at the African Union Commission (AUC) will be August 6, 2024.

In a statement on Monday, August 5, the AU noted that only names submitted before then will be considered in the pre-selection process undertaken by the Panel of Eminent Africans.

"The deadline for the submission of the regional nominations of candidates vying for the 8 senior leadership positions at the African Union Commission is 6th August 24.

"Only names of candidates submitted by the region will be considered in the pre-selection process undertaken by the Panel of Eminent Africans. Further, only Member States that are not under AU sanctions are allowed to submit candidates," read part of the statement by the AU.

The African Union added that interested candidates should submit their curriculum vitae along with vision statements to their member states.

"Interested candidates submit, to their member states, their curriculum vitae, along with vision statements outlining how they intend to advance the transformative agenda of the African Union, and to address the existing and emerging challenges facing the continent," it added.

The AUC elections will be held in February 2025 during an AU summit.

The eight positions that are up for grabs include the chairperson, the deputy chairperson and 6 commissioners.

Meanwhile, Kenya formally submitted the requisite documentation for Azimio leader Raila Odinga, who is eyeing the AUC Chairperson post.

In a statement on Monday, July 29, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei said he submitted Odinga’s documents to the Dean of Eastern Region, Dharmraj Busgeeth.

“Under the authority of the Government of Kenya and as per the Statutes and Rules of the African Union Commission, we have today formally submitted requisite documentation of Kenya's nominee for the Chairmanship of African Union, H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga, to the Dean of Eastern Region, H.E. Dharmraj Busgeeth, Ambassador of Mauritius,” remarked Sing’oei.
