President William Ruto has announced that the National Youth Service (NYS) will supervise a cohort of young people the government will recruit under the 'Climate Works Mtaani' initiative.
Speaking during the NYS pass-out ceremony in Gilgil, Nakuru County, on Monday, August 26, the president disclosed that the program will involve planting of trees in an effort to respond to climate change.
“I want to announce that the NYS will be supervising the cohort of young people that shortly we will be recruiting under our climate works mtaani initiative that will bring more young people into the space of greening Kenya, managing our environmental sustainability and making sure that we respond to matters of climate change using climate action initiatives that we have in place," Ruto remarked.
The Head of State ordered Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi to work with his colleagues in Environment, Housing and Defence to provide leadership under the initiative.

He reiterated the government's campaign to plant 15 billion trees in response to climate change.
"I am instructing the minister responsible for NYS to work with the CSs responsible for Environment, Housing and Defence for them to provide leadership under this initiative as we focus on growing 15 billion trees as our response to matters climate change," the president stated.
The Climate Works Mtaani initiative is a rebrand of former President Uhuru Kenyatta's Kazi Mtaani program, which President Ruto previously discontinued before he announced its return on July 15, 2024.
Speaking in Kibra on October 25, 2022, during the launch of a housing project, the Head of State said that Kazi Mtaani would be replaced with a better program.
