President William Ruto has announced that all constituencies in Nairobi will become sub-counties.
Speaking during a meeting with national government administrators at the Kenya School of Law in Lower Kabete on Monday, September 16, the Head of State explained that the move was aimed at enhancing better administration and service delivery in the city.
He expressed that many Kenyans had been disadvantaged over the years owing to the population. Ruto cited the instance of Embakasi Sub-County which had five constituencies.
Consequently, he directed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to draft a plan on how the new sub-counties will be gazetted and managed.
Nairobi County currently has 11 sub-counties. Therefore, should all the constituencies become sub-counties, they will be 17.
"We have 11 sub-counties in Nairobi and I want to announce here today that all constituencies will become sub-counties. CS Kindiki can now go and implement it," he announced.
Meanwhile, Ruto expressed that city residents will be the biggest beneficiaries of the expansion plan noting that the recruitment of police and National Youth Service (NYS) personnel will factor in the new sub-counties.
"We have been left behind when it comes to administration. Even when we will be enrolling people to the police and NYS we will also factor in the sub-counties," Ruto added.
"The management of Nairobi is very important to us."
