Police IG Kanja Reveals Number of Kenyans Missing Due to Abductions Since June

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has disclosed that a total of 57 cases of abductions have been reported since June 2024 to date.

Speaking while appearing before a Parliament committee on Thursday, November 7, Kanja noted that out of the 57 cases, 22 people have been found alive while 29 are still missing.

The Police IG further intimated that six victims of the abductions were found dead.

“The National Police Service has since recorded a total of 57 cases of kidnappings and abductions that were reported countrywide from June 2024 to date. 22 people have been found alive, 29 are still missing to date and six victims were found dead,” Kanja explained.

At the same time, the police boss reiterated that police do not abduct individuals, but they arrest and detain them in lawful facilities.

"Previously, I made it clear that police don't abduct or kidnap. Police only arrest, and we detain in the lawful facilities, that is within police stations. And after that, investigations are commenced immediately. Those who are found to meet the threshold of being taken to court are taken to court while those who don't are freed," Kanja remarked.

Meanwhile, while commenting on the missing Member of County Assembly (MCA) from Wajir County, Yussuf Hussein Ahmed, the police boss denied knowing the whereabouts of the politician.

Kanja said investigations are ongoing and appealed to the members of the public for any information about the whereabouts of the Della Anole Ward MCA.

"After the report was made to the police, we have been carrying out our investigations and this case remains active. We have not gotten any additional information about the whereabouts of this honourable member of Wajir County," Kanja stated.
