Samburu Senator Steve Lelegwe and his aides on Saturday
night narrowly escaped death after their convoy was attacked by armed gunmen in
Opiroi, Samburu North.
According to the Senator, his convoy was attacked at around
7:30pm while they were on their way on the way to Maralal town.
Narrating the scaring incident, Senator Lelegwe noted that the attackers opened fire on his car, but luckily no one was hurt.
"I was on my to Maralal when we were attacked. It was a
lucky escape and nobody was injured during the incident," Senator Lelegwe
told the Nation.
He filed a report at the Maralal Police Station and
investigations have commenced.
According to the area police boss Alex Rotich, the attack
might have been orchestrated by highway bandits who intended to rob passengers,
not knowing that they convoy belonged to a senator.
Mr Rotich further noted that police have increased patrol in
the area with an aim of nabbing thee criminals.
“We are still investigating but preliminary findings
indicate that they are highway robbers who had no sinister motive against
Senator Lelegwe,” the police boss said.

Meanwhile, Senator Lelegwe recent made headlines after he
was arrested alongside two other senators on the eve of a crucial county revenue
sharing formula vote in the Senate.
The arrest elicited heated debate in the Senate with
senators vowing not to vote on the issue until their colleagues were released.
The three senators were eventually released after recording
statements at different police stations in the country.
