  • DP Ruto speaks on MPs passing BBI Bill. Earlier MP Moses Kuria had alleged that MPs were bribed to pass the Bill.

Deputy President William Ruto has spoken hours after Members of the National Assembly passed the 2021 BBI Constitutional Amendment Bill.

In his statement, Dr Ruto urged for tolerance and urged those who oppose the BBI to accept the outcome which promotes democracy.

"Being a democracy, the national assembly voted on the Constitution amendment Bill and so will the senate. When the people's turn comes they too will vote and we will march on. We should respect everyone's decision & accept democratic outcomes; all views makes us stronger together," his tweet read.

On Thursday night MPs passed the BBI Bill after a majority of members voted in support of the Constitutional Amendment push.

Over 300 members of the National Assembly participated in the vote that went into the second stage where 235 supported the bill, 83 for No while two abstained.

Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri on Thursday surprised many after he voted for the BBI Bill despite campaigning against it for the past two years.

Ngunjiri is a key ally of DP Ruto and pundits expected that he alongside other Tanga tanga leaders will vote against the Bill, but he decided to support it.

Critics of the Bill like Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria alleged that some legislators were bribed to pass the 2021 BBI Constitutional Amendment Bill.

In a post on his Facebook page, Kuria claimed that after voting yes, the legislators received Sh100,000 each. He, however, did not mention names or provide any evidence backing his claim.

“MPs voting yes currently receiving their 100K from the office of a senior parliamentary leader,” he posted on his Facebook page.
