Westgate terror attack suspect wants court to intervene over bad Kamiti diet

A Westgate terror suspect on Friday complained of the 'harsh' prison conditions during a court appearance.

Liban Abdullahi complained of the diet saying the porridge has no sugar and he further claimed he was only eating milk and bread.

“Kwa sasa nakunya uji na mkate na maziwa kidogo.niko na shida na maharagwe na skuma,” he said.

The second suspect Mohammed Ahmed Abdi told the court that he needs an extra blanket, arguing that the cells are freezing cold.

A third suspect, Hussein Hassan Mustafa said he has sight complications and is not able to see well.
In his ruling Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi noted that none of the suspects seemed to have a serious medical issue adding that they appeared to be faring well.

"None of the accused persons seems to have a serious medical issue. They appear to be well even as the third accused person says he's not able to see well. The prisoner in charge is hereby called to address those issues and file a report in court," Andayi ruled.

"The report is expected to be filed in 10 days of how he has addressed the complainants raised by the accused persons," he added.

The three accused persons of the 2013 Westgate terror attack were arraigned at a Nairobi Court for their sentencing on Friday but it was postponed to October 5.

The trio is charged with their role in the Westgate terror attack, supporting a terror group and being in the country illegally.

In September 2013, gunmen opened fire on shoppers in the busy Westgate Mall killing at least 67 people and injuring more than 150 others.
