KPA has issued a 14-day notice to shipping lines and stakeholders, warning of imminent destruction or removal of long-stay containers and condemned cargo.

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has issued a 14-day notice to shipping lines and stakeholders, warning of imminent destruction or removal of long-stay containers and condemned cargo still lying idle at the Port of Mombasa.

In a notice dated July 31 and released to the public on Thursday, August 7, KPA said the move is part of an ongoing port clean-up exercise aimed at enhancing yard space utilization and ensuring smoother, safer operations and service delivery.

The authority revealed that a recent yard audit identified a list of containers marked for destruction, having overstayed or been condemned for various reasons.

Owners have been directed to arrange for the destruction or evacuation of the said cargo within 14 days, by the close of business on August 14, 2025.

“Shipping lines are hereby notified and required to make arrangements for their destruction and/or evacuation from the port premises,” the notice reads in part.

KPA further warned that failure to comply will result in the authority proceeding with destruction or removal of the listed containers at the owner's expense and without further communication.

The directive urged affected stakeholders to act swiftly to avoid losses once the deadline lapses.
