President Uhuru Kenyatta has addressed the increasing social ills among students in the country, noting that everyone has a role to play in solving the issue.
Speaking on Monday during an interview with a number of vernacular radio stations, the President appealed to religious leaders, parents, teachers and community leaders to instill good morals among students.
Addressing parents, the Head of State urged them to closely monitor their kids, adding that they should examine content being consumed by their kids and the company they keep.
“The government alone can’t enforce good conduct. Let’s work together to eliminate these ills,” he said.
The president remark comes at a time when cases of students attacking teachers and other school staff have been on the increase.
The latest case of a student attacking a member of stack happened on Sunday where a form three pupil at Nyang’ori Boys High School in Vihiga County, allegedly hit and killed a school guard with a metal rod.
“A student from a renowned boys’ secondary school in Vihiga, is facing murder charges after he assaulted & killed the school’s guard today morning. The student had become unruly and attacked other students using a metal rod, when the guard identified as Willy Mukonambi intervened the 18-year-old form three student then turned on the guard and hit him on the head repeatedly, using the metal rod.
“He was rescued by his colleagues who together with the school nurse rushed him to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, in critical condition. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. The suspect has been placed in custody and will be charged with murder contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the penal code,” DCI said in a statement.
