The Council of Governors (CoG) is set to elect new officeholders on January 29, 2021, as the current team led by Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya exits office.
Reports indicate that lobbying is on high gear, with several governors keen to replace Oparanya.
Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria who has been serving as CoG vice-chair is reportedly being fronted by the handshake team, while Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana who’s the current CoG chief whip is being coated by the Hustler brigade.
Kisii Governor James Ongwae is reportedly being considered for the vice-chair post by the handshake team.

Reports indicate that the handshake team is keen to ensure the next officeholder is a supporter of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
Meanwhile, Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana has also declared interest in the seat, arguing that it is time for the minority to lead the body.
The Chairmanship of CoG is a crucial post as the occupant gets to work directly with the President on key issues affecting the country.
For instance, Governor Oparanya has been working closely with President Uhuru Kenyatta on managing the coronavirus pandemic in Kenya.
The CoG Constitution provides for election through consensus, failure to which a vote will be taken.
