Kenya Kwanza administration through the Ministry of Education has issued a directive to all Regional Directors of Education ahead of school reopening.
In a letter seen by Nairobileo, Elyas Abdi, the Director General in the Ministry of Education directed the regional education directors to assess the effects of long rains on learning institutions.
Elyas asked them to evaluate the levels of schools' preparedness to handle floods caused by heavy rains in various parts of the country.
The Ministry noted that it would like to collect data in all basic education institutions to gauge readiness for opening which is slated for next week on Monday.

"The Ministry is in the process of collecting data/ information to establish the readiness of all basic education institutions for the second term 2024," the notice read in part.
The Directors have been given 24 hours to submit a comprehensive report explaining the readiness to handle floods in their areas of jurisdiction.
The report will inform the next decision regarding the reopening of schools.
This comes after several areas have experienced heavy rains leading to flooding. Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos and Budalangi are among the areas greatly affected by the floods.
To help affected families, Ruto convened a multi-agency team and ordered immediate intervention. He ordered the relevant ministries to coordinate evacuation plans and distribute food and non-food aid to the affected individuals.
“Unfortunately, we will have to move some of the [flood victims] without their consent because otherwise, they are putting themselves in danger,” he said.
The President said the National Youth Service had been instructed to set aside land to resettle those affected.
“I have authorised the National Youth Service to move some of these people to safe ground as we decide what to do with them,” Ruto stated.
“I will be having another emergency session tomorrow with multi-agency teams to make sure we provide adequate support to all those in need and to move citizens who are in dangerous areas that may be susceptible to floods.”
