The 2024 Nairobi City Marathon that was scheduled for Sunday, July 7, 2024, has been postponed.

In a statement on Tuesday, July 2, the organizing committee said the marathon would be held on September 8, 2024.

The committee noted that the event was postponed due to unavoidable external circumstances beyond their control.

“After widespread consultations, evaluation, and introspection, the Nairobi City Marathon, earlier scheduled for this Sunday, July 7, has been postponed to September 8.

“The postponement has been occasioned by unavoidable, external circumstances beyond the control of the organizing committee,” read the statement in part.

The organizing committee mentioned that thousands of athletes who had already registered for the event have proposed that it be shelved to another date.

“We apologize to anyone who had expended resources and time preparing for this marathon and empathize with the inconvenience brought upon you by the sudden change of plans. We will push full steam ahead and work non-stop to ensure that the marathon is one of the biggest and most memorable events across the globe this year,” the statement added.

Further, the organizing committee said the postponement of the marathon provides them an opportunity to put in place measures to ensure a bigger and better edition.

The committee urged interested participants to use the extended period to continue registering for the marathon and training for it.

“We thank all those who have thus far registered, many of who include foreign athletes. We believe that the entry of these foreign athletes will go a long way in spicing up the competition and enhance Nairobi City Marathon's status as one of the world's most-watched road races,” the committee remarked.
