Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been impeached by the Members of the Meru County Assembly (MCAs) for the third time.
In a vote held at the Meru County Assembly on Thursday, August 8, 49 out of 69 MCAs voted in favor of Governor Mwangaza’s impeachment while 17 voted No.
Three Meru County MCAs on the other hand did not vote during the impeachment motion.
Nominated MCA Zipporah Kinya had tabled a fresh impeachment motion against Governor Mwangaza on July 31 accusing her of gross violations of the Constitution, various national and county laws, and abuse of office.

This was after Kinya withdrew the impeachment motion that she had tabled in the Meru County Assembly on July 17.
The High Court had on July 29 directed the Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders to resolve the wrangles between Mwangaza and the Meru MCAs.
The Njuri Njeke however distanced themselves from the case saying they don’t have the mandate or capability to stop an impeachment motion.
This is the third time that the Meru County Assembly has impeached Governor Mwangaza. The Meru County boss was first impeached in December 2022 but was saved by the Senate on December 30, 2022.
She was again impeached by the Meru MCAs on October 26, 2023, but the senate again threw out the charges fronted against her.
Governor Mwangaza's fate now lies in the hands of the Senate, which will either save her for a third time or approve her removal.
