Wanjigi was arrested on Monday after he presented himself to the DCI.

Businessman Jimi Wanjigi was on Tuesday, August 20 freed on a personal bond of Ksh10 million.

Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi directed Wanjigi to deposit his passport in court pending a ruling on his plea-taking that will be delivered on September 12, 2024.

Wanjigi was released together with his personal assistant David Kibe.

The renowned businessman was released after his legal team comprised of Klaonzo Musyoka, Paul Muite, Willis Otieno and John Khaminwa asked the court to defer Wanjigi’s plea-taking, claiming that his rights were violated.

The defense lawyers argued that Justice Bahati Mwamute had issued an order blocking the police from arresting their client.

Wanjigi was arrested on Monday afternoon moments after he presented himself to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for grilling over his alleged funding of the anti-government protests.

He was detained at the Kamukunji Police Station before being arraigned in court on Tuesday morning.

On Monday, Dennis Itumbi pointed out that Wanjigi was arrested over following the revocation of his firearms license and not because of protests.

"Pursuant to Section 4(1) read together with Section 4(3)(b) of the Firearms Act, you are in possession of firearms without a valid/expired Firearms Certificate contrary to the law," a letter shared by Itumbi from the Firearms Licensing Board boss Rashid Yakub read in part.
