Isaac Mwaura noted that 7,662 public servants are expected to retire in the current financial year.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has announced that 43,976 public servants will retire in the next five years.

Addressing the media on Thursday at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Mwaura noted that over 7000 public servants will retire from their jobs this year.

The Government Spokesperson said the vacancies will be given to jobless youth in the country.

“The payroll also indicates that 43,976 officers are aged 55 years and above and are expected to retire between this year and 2029, with 7,662 expected to retire in this financial year alone,” said Mwaura.

At the same time, Mwaura noted that 39,441 state officers are serving contractual terms and their contracts will expire on various dates depending on their periods of engagement.

“This creates 46,838 job opportunities for our jobless youth to serve in the government either on permanent or contractual terms upon the retirement and expiry of current contracts,” Mwaura added.

He also highlighted that 7,477 officers have retired between 13th September 2023 and 30th June 2024 from State Departments, County Executives, and County Assemblies.

Mwaura’s announcement comes a month after President William Ruto announced public servants aged 60 years and above will be required to proceed to retirement.

The Head of State pointed out that there would be no extensions of tenures for public officers aged 60 and above whatsoever.

“Henceforth, public servants who attain the retirement age of 60 shall be required to immediately proceed on retirement with no extensions to their tenure of service whatsoever,” said President Ruto on July 5.
