High Schools Start Sending Students Home Due to Ongoing Teachers Strike

A section of high schools has been forced to send students home as the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) strike enters its second week.  

Jomo Kenyatta Boys Secondary School and Jomo Kenyatta Girls' Secondary School in Nakuru County on Monday, September 2 sent students home until the teachers' strike ends.

The two schools sent messages to parents on Monday morning informing them to go and get their children or expect them at home. 

"Early in the morning at 6:10 AM, we received a message to come and pick up the children or that the children were coming home.

“This was due to the commotion that was happening at the school simply because there were no teachers. The head teacher, seeing the situation, used wisdom and informed us to expect our children back home,” a parent revealed.

In Makueni County, eight schools have been shut and students sent home as the teachers' strike continues.

AIC Nyayo Girls Secondary School was closed after two dormitories were torched on Sunday night.

Other schools that have been closed include; Makueni Boys High School, Ngoto Secondary School, Kaluluini Secondary School, Makindu Girls High School, and Kaumoni Boys Secondary School.

The KUPPET strike began on Monday last week and has paralyzed learning in nearly all public secondary schools in the country.

The teachers are demanding for promotion of teachers with higher education qualifications and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to remit all loans and NSSF deductions to the statutory bodies.

The industrial action was initially called to push for the implementation of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
