Six learners have been killed after being knocked down by a vehicle.

Six pupils have been killed following a tragic hit-and-run accident at Wiitu shopping centre along the Kitui-Kibwezi road, Kitui County.  

Ikutha Deputy County Commissioner Vincent Lomachary confirmed the Friday morning, September 13, accident. 

Lomachary disclosed that the pupils were struck by a speeding Probox vehicle while they were crossing the road.

He said that out of the six, three were pupils at Kyaoni Primary School, while the other three were students at Kyaoni Secondary School.

The Deputy County Commissioner stated that the driver of the vehicle sped off but later surrendered himself to the police.

The vehicle has since been impounded as investigations into the incident continue. 

The incident comes just a day after one person was killed and 12 others injured when a Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanker lost control and crashed into several vehicles, including a 14-seater matatu, at the Mai Mahiu escarpment.

In the Wednesday, September 11 incident, the matatu, belonging to Galaxy Sacco, was hit from behind, causing it to overturn and roll down the escarpment.

The Kenya Red Cross disclosed that one person who was in a critical condition was rushed to the hospital while the others were attended to at the scene. 

"One person in critical condition was rushed to the hospital, while eleven others were attended to at the scene of a road traffic incident involving a trailer and a 14-seater matatu in Mai Mahiu," Kenya Red Cross said in a statement.
