Officer from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) have arrested six people suspected to be involved in illegal dumping activities in Nairobi.

In a statement on Tuesday, October 1, NEMA disclosed that the arrests were made after it launched a major crackdown on illegal dumpsites in Nairobi's Industrial Area.

The authority further stated that several lorries were impounded and drivers operating with NEMA licenses arrested in the joint operation with Nairobi City County.

"Today, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) in collaboration with Nairobi City County, launched a major crackdown on illegal dumpsites in Industrial Area, Nairobi.

"Six individuals involved in illegal dumping activities were arrested, several lorries impounded and drivers operating without valid NEMA transport licenses were also arrested," NEMA stated.

The authority reiterated its commitment to ensuring the environment as kept clean and offenders brought to book.

At the same time, NEMA urged members of the public to dispose of waste responsibly and waste handlers to dispose of waste in designated licensed dumping sites.

"Members of the public are urged to dispose of waste responsibly and ensure they follow environmental regulations.

"Waste handlers are advised to dispose their waste in designated and licensed dumping sites and obtain NEMA transport licenses," NEMA explained.
