The United States Embassy in Nairobi will be closed on Thursday, October 10.

In an update on its official social media pages, the embassy said the offices will remain shut to observe Mazingira Day holiday.

Services will resume on Friday.

"The Embassy will be closed tomorrow to celebrate #MazingiraDay. Offices will reopen on Friday, October 11, 2024," the embassy said.

Mazingira Day, observed on October 10, is a newly established public holiday in Kenya, replacing Utamaduni Day.

Officially recognized by President William Ruto's assent to the Miscellaneous Amendments Bill 2024, it focuses on environmental conservation and awareness of climate issues.

On Tuesday, October 8, Environment CS Aden Duale pointed out three activities to be undertaken during Mazinga Day celebrations.

The CS urged to participate in cleaning exercises at homes, roads, parks and other public areas.

"To celebrate Mazingira Day, all Kenyans are therefore encouraged to participate in tree planting in line with the government's efforts towards accelerating landscape and ecosystem restoration by growing 15 Billion trees by 2032 which will also be instrumental in addressing the effects of climate change," read the statement in part.

Additionally, Duale noted that there will be forums where Kenyans can discuss environmental issues such as pollution and waste management.

The CS emphasized that the holiday was an opportunity to undertake measures that will mitigate climate change now and in the future.

"Mazingira Day is a crucial opportunity to accelerate environmental protection and raise awareness of the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

"It calls for urgent meaningful actions from both government and citizens to ensure prosperity and sustainability for present and future generations," he added.
