Kang'ata Reveals Powerful Politicians who Leaked his BBI Letter

Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata has revisited his contentious BBI letter to President Uhuru Kenyatta, noting that it may have been leaked by two senior leaders.

Speaking during a recent interview, Kang’ata noted that the letter could have been leaked by Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju or Senate Majority Leader Samuel Poghisio.

According to Kang’ata only the two had access to the letter, as they were copied in the correspondence.

On claims that he used the wrong channel to address the President, Senator Kang’ata stated that he did not send a direct copy to the Head of State, adding that he used the party leadership to reach his party leader.

“I regret the leakage of the letter, it is not me. Either it was leaked by Majority Leader Poghisio because he had a copy or Raphael Tuju. By the way, that letter did not go directly to the President, it was going through Mr. Tuju, so either him or Poghisio who got that letter before… I didn’t leak that letter,” he said.

As to whether he regrets writing the letter, Kang’ata noted that he stands with the contents of the letter as it reflects the situation on the ground.

“I do not regret the content, I strongly believe what I wrote first and foremost is an expression of my thoughts and this is a country that believes in democracy, we need to respect thoughts,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senator Kang’ata was recently de-whipped from his powerful Senate Majority whip post and replaced by Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi.

Many believed he was de-whipped because of the letter, but Jubilee maintains that Kang’ata was axed for using the wrong avenues to articulate his concerns especially to the president.
