The Ministry of Education has renewed its efforts to close alcoholic business outlets near schools.
In a statement issued by Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura on Friday, November 29, the Ministry was keen on closing down alcoholic businesses that operate within 300 meters of basic learning institutions.
Mwaura indicated that the State Department for Basic Education had already mapped out 2,257 outlets for closure.
The businesses are expected to be closed down immediately as the government prepares for the 2025 school calendar.

"The Government in coordination and collaboration with other government agencies has, therefore, embarked on a campaign to protect the health of our children and youth," read the statement in part.
"Accordingly, the State Department for Basic Education has mapped out 2,257 alcoholic drinks dispensing outlets that are within 300 metres of Basic Learning Institutions Countrywide with the aim of closing them down with immediate effect for breach of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act."
Mwaura added that the move would also protect children given that some students had been lured into alcoholism in the recent past.
Meanwhile, the government called on parents to begin preparations for the 2025 academic calendar which begins January 6, 2024.
"The Ministry of Education has released the 2025 academic term dates. Term 1 will begin on the 6th of January 2025 and end on the 4th of April, 2025," he stated.
"Term 2 will start on 28th April 2025 and end on 1st August 2025. Term three will begin on 25th August and end on 24th October 2025. Parents are therefore urged to plan accordingly."
