Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s presidential bid appears to have caused divisions in the Coastal region, with a section of senior leaders working on launching a coast region party.
A number of governors and senior coast leaders were meant to accompany Governor Joho to Lamu for a rally on Saturday, but most shunned the event.
In Kilifi; Joho’s ally for the past 15 years, Governor Amason Kingi held a consultative meeting with leaders from the county and resolved to form a Coast region party by March 2021.
“People everywhere in the region are saying that they want the party yesterday, we have resolved that I bring the June deadline for the party forward to March,” Kingi said.
According to Kingi, after forming the party, they’ll mobilise all leaders from the Coast region to join it, so that they can speak in one voice.

“We will ask all the leaders to drop their ambitions for the sake of the region. We will then decide who to work with and if they will support us for the top seat or we support them and on what terms,” he opined.
Speaking in Lamu while popularizing his presidential bid, Joho dismissed the move to form a Coastal party noting that the region should desist from playing tribal politics.
On his presidential ambitions, Joho noted that he is firmly in the race.
“Those who think that my presidential ambition is a joke should know that the journey has just begun,” he said.
