A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer has been arrested for allegedly assaulting and fatally injuring a civilian at a police station in Nakuru County on December 25.
The suspect, Sgt. John Kimani Muturi, was accused of attacking the victim, Morris Gachanja, while they were having drinks at Githioro Police Station canteen.
Muturi was presented before Nakuru Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet to face the charges against him.
"The respondent, John Kimani Muturi, before being arraigned in this court was in our custody for allegedly assaulting and fatally injuring one Morris Gachanja through kicks and blows," the prosecution told the court.
The prosecution sought 14 days to detain the suspect in order to complete investigations into the incident.

It argued that the suspect would interfere with a postmortem examination of the deceased as well as forensic analysis if free.
However, the Nakuru Senior Resident Magistrate granted the prosecution five days to detain the military officer as it concluded investigations.
"The role of the respondent in postmortem or any forensic analysis as highlighted is non-existent and further undermines the rationale of continued detention. The applicant has failed to substantiate as well the reasons why he needs to check on the background information and how it will aid their case," the magistrate stated.
The matter will be mentioned on January 3, 2025.
