Police in Mombasa have arrested eight suspected robbers who are alleged to be behind a spate of robbery incidents in the region.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, January 2, Mombasa County Police Commander Peter Kimani stated that the arrests were a major breakthrough, with several items, including mobile phones, being recovered.

Kimani noted that in one incident, one of the arrested suspects chopped off the hand of a boda boda rider who was headed to work.

"Criminals who have been arrested are the ones who have been terrorizing members of the public and further to that, we managed to identify one of them who recently chopped off the left hand of a boda boda rider in the early morning hours when he was going to work.

"These criminals are the same who last month, towards Christmas, accosted a tourist van that was coming to pick a member of staff and they managed to rob them. This is a major breakthrough for us," Kimani remarked.

The police boss further sounded a warning to any persons involved in crime in the area that their days were numbered.

He also declared that some individuals were financing the suspected criminals, claiming that they were using them to commit crime.

"I want to give a warning to all criminals who are operating that this time round we are breaking the chain. Those who are receiving these mobile phones and flashing them will also face robbery with violence charges.

"There are financiers who are sending these people out to go and commit crime and bring them the mobile phones. Therefore, we are also targeting them, meaning that the whole chain we are going to break it," Kimani told the press.
