The Ministry of Sports has set up six designated fan zones for supporters to watch the upcoming match between Zambia and Kenya on Sunday, August 17.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 13, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the initiative is aimed at offering a safe and enjoyable football experience for all.

"These fan zones will bring the stadium atmosphere closer to the people, while helping us manage attendance at Kasarani in line with CAF’s requirements," he said.

The designated fan zones are Uhuru Park, Lucky Summer – Ngomo area (behind Kasarani Stadium), Dandora Stadium, Utalii (Stima Club), Jacaranda Grounds, and Kibera DC Grounds.

Notably, the announcement comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) slapped Kenya with a Ksh6.4 million fine over security lapses during the Kenya vs Morocco game on Sunday, August 10.

In a statement, CAF confirmed that its disciplinary board had established Kenya’s culpability for a series of safety and security violations during the high-profile fixture.

"The CAF Disciplinary Board charged the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) with multiple safety and security breaches during Kenya TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) match against Morocco at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

"The disciplinary board found Kenya guilty and imposed a fine of USD 50,000 (Ksh6.4million)," read the statement in part.

In a bid to avoid more sanctions, FKF urged fans to arrive at least five hours before kickoff for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) match between Kenya and Zambia.

Speaking in a press conference on Tuesday, August 12, FKF President Hussein Mohammed said fan zones will be set up for those unable to obtain tickets.

"I urge all Kenyans to turn up at least 5 hours earlier on match days with their digital tickets on their phones. We will set up an official fan zone for those who are unable to get the tickets from the official vendors," he said.

On the other hand, Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairman Nicolas Musonye stated that strict access controls will be in place to protect the event’s integrity.

"No one will access the stadium without a ticket. We will enforce by all means possible, because our reputation is at stake.

"Gates shall be opened at the right time so as things can run smoothly and minimize crowds outside the stadium," he stated.
