I was very impressed - President Ruto.

President William Ruto has disclosed that he was greatly impressed by Mutahi Kagwe during his vetting by the National Assembly for the position of Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture.

Speaking on Friday, January 17, at State House, Nairobi, during the swearing-in ceremony of the three cabinet secretaries recently approved by Parliament, President Ruto praised Kagwe for his articulate responses to questions from Members of Parliament.

The Head of State commended Kagwe’s deep understanding of the government’s vision for the ministry and expressed confidence in his leadership, stating that he would rely on him to steer the ministry forward.

“I was very impressed to see Mutahi Kagwe take on questions from Members of Parliament with a great understanding of where we want to go from here. I am sure and confident that the transformation in the agriculture sector that is necessary for enhancing productivity is going to be the front and centre of your leadership of the team at the Ministry of Agriculture.

“Just to confirm to you that the procurement of fertilizer has already been undertaken. I will look up to you for leadership on how this fertilizer is going to get to every farmer to make sure that we eliminate any impediments and shortcomings,” President Ruto remarked.

At the same time, the president noted that he was happy with the former Health CS's stance on the government's planned nationwide livestock vaccination.

President Ruto reaffirmed that the exercise will be voluntary, adding that the government was only seeking to ensure agricultural products met market standards. 

“I am very confident that the challenge we’ve had persuading farmers to vaccinate their livestock, you (Kagwe) have what it takes. I was very happy that you took the position which I shared that it is a voluntary exercise and nobody will be forced to do anything. All we want is to make sure our products meet very high standards set by our markets," he stated.

Kagwe will take over from Andrew Karanja, who has already been gazetted as Kenya's ambassador to Brazil.
