Ali is seen to be the closest challenger of Raila for the AU seat ahead of the February elections.

Djibouti's candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson seat, Mahmoud Ali, has denied reports of dropping out of the February elections.

In statements on his X account on Thursday, January 23, Ali maintained that he was still in the race, terming the recent reports as fake news.

It had been alleged that the Djibouti candidate was dropping out of the race in favour of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Ali, in response, noted that the fake news was being circulated to distract his supporters.

"Don’t bother yourself with fake news, it is a trivial attempt by my adversaries to distract my supporters and mislead them," read the statement in part.

"Rest assured dear friends and supporters, I am still in the race and doing well so far."

Ali is seen to be the closest challenger of Raila for the AU seat.

Notably, various leaders have expressed concern over fake social media accounts in his name that have been providing misleading information to the public.

The AUC elections are set to be held in February during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU between 12th -16th February 2025.
