The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has directed a wood processing company in Njoro, Nakuru County to take remedy measures after an uproar over air pollution.
In a statement dated Thursday, January 30, NEMA revealed that it inspected the facility which exposed various loopholes in compliance with the air pollution regulations.
Consequently, the company was directed to take remedy measures within 21 days.
Following reports of a wood processing factory emitting excessive smoke within Njoro, Nakuru County, the Authority’s Environmental inspectors visited the facility on 22nd January 2025 where it was established that the facility had not complied with the requirements of Stack Emissions License as provided for under the Environmental Management and Coordination (Air Quality) regulations 2014 resulting in malfunction of one of their stacks which has been rectified," read the statement in part.

"The facility was also ordered to initiate a process of stack emissions measurements which will lead to the application of stack emission license from NEMA within 21 days failure to which appropriate action will be taken."
Notably, the directive of NEMA came after residents lamented that they had experienced health complications following the emissions from the factory.
According to residents who took the complaints online, some residents were experiencing allergies in their eyes owing to the emissions.
Some residents also lamented that the government was slow in taking action despite the numerous complaints raised by residents.
