A fire caused by a gas explosion ravaged Mwimuto in Kiambu County, burning down 21 houses and 12 shops. 

The fire incident has left dozens of residents homeless and business owners counting heavy losses. 

According to witnesses who spoke to the media, the fire spread rapidly, making it difficult to salvage property. 

"All my household items including TV and furniture have been burnt. I have lost everything, and as of now, I don't have where to go or where to begin," one victim expressed her devastation.

Another resident described the extent of the destruction, stating, "At least 21 houses and 12 shops have been burnt down following the fire outbreak. We have not been able to salvage anything. The fire was caused by a gas explosion; the owner of the gas said they did not know it would explode."

This comes about three days after 200 families in Soweto Highrise area in Lang'ata Constituency lost their homes and property in a night fire incident on Friday, February 7.

In a statement dated Saturday, February 8, area MP Phelix Odiwuor alia Jalang'o noted the fire also affected those with businesses in the area.

According to the MP, no one was injured during the fire incident.

While the fire was contained from spreading, its cause was yet to be known at the time of publication.

Jalang'o added that plans were underway to assist the affected families as they begin to rebuild their lives.
