Baringo Senator William Cheptumo is dead.
Cheptumo's death was confirmed by President William Ruto on Sunday, February 16, who remembered the Senator as a progressive and dedicated leader.
In his condolence message, Ruto also highlighted how Cheptumo worked tirelessly for the transformation of Baringo County.
"Senator William Cheptumo was a progressive leader who was dedicated to public service. He was vocal, hardworking and a tireless champion for the transformation of Baringo.
"The Cheptumo family, friends, and the people of Baringo County are in our thoughts and prayers. Rest In Peace, Mheshimiwa," he said.

On his part, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi mourned Cheptumo as a dedicated leader who undertook his responsibilities with zeal and selflessness.
"With profound shock and grief, I have learnt of the untimely demise of Hon William Kipkorir Cheptumo, Senator of Baringo County at Nairobi Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment. Senator Cheptumo was a dedicated leader, who took up his legislative responsibilities with unmatched zeal and selflessly articulated the interests of the people of Baringo and Kenyans at large.
"The Senate of Kenya has lost a leader who firmly believed in Devolution and used every opportunity to advance its cause and the welfare of Kenyans. I join his family, the people of Baringo County and Kenyans, in mourning a great leader and pray that God grants us all grace and fortitude to bear this monumental loss. May his soul rest in perfect peace," he said.
Cheptumo earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of Nairobi between 1988 and 1991, followed by a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law in 1992.
His legal career commenced as a Legal Officer at the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation from May 1993 to September 1996.
Cheptumo then served as a Legal Officer at the Central Bank of Kenya between October 1996 and December 1998.
Subsequently, he established his own law firm, Cheptumo & Company Advocates, which he managed from 1998 to 2007.
In 2007, Cheptumo transitioned into politics, being elected as the Member of Parliament for Baringo North Constituency, a position he held until 2022.
During his tenure, he also served as the Assistant Minister of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs from 2008 to 2012.
In 2022, Cheptumo was elected as the Senator for Baringo County, and shortly thereafter, he was elected Chairperson of the Senate National Security, Defense and Foreign Relations Committee.
