A 43-year-old woman identified as Kamanthe Makato was arrested for the brutal murder of her 71-year-old mother, Mukeli Makato. 

In a statement on Wednesday, February 19, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the tragedy unfolded while Mukeli was fetching firewood accompanied by her grandchild.  

The agency said the situation turned deadly when Kamanthe joined them, and what started as a misunderstanding quickly escalated into violence.  

"The victim, 71-year-old Mukeli Makato, was fetching firewood with her grandchild when Kamanthe joined them. A misunderstanding erupted between the mother and daughter escalating into a violent frenzy that ended in horror as Kamanthe violently attacked her mother, hacking her to death," the DCI reported.

According to DCI, the scene was one of horror with the young grandchild fleeing the area screaming for help after Kamanthe attacked her mother. 

 "Responding swiftly to the distress call, police officers arrived to find Mukeli's lifeless body lying in a pool of blood, bearing multiple deep cuts from her head down to her legs," the DCI statement continued. 

The murder weapon, identified as a blood-stained panga, was recovered at the scene and has been retained as an exhibit.

The body of Mukeli Makato was transported to Kilome Nursing Home Hospital Morgue, where an autopsy will be conducted to further understand the circumstances of her death.

Kamanthe is currently in custody, being processed for her upcoming court appearance.
