The family revealed that a postmortem would be conducted in the coming days to ascertain what caused his death. 

The family of former IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati has revealed that their kin was diagnosed with advanced brain cancer months after leaving office in 2023.

Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, February 24, the family spokesperson Erick Nyongesa detailed that Chebukati received treatment and was flown to Germany at some point to have the tumours removed.

As detailed by Nyongesa, he returned home after recovery and was able to address several international conferences.

However, in 2024, the tumours returned, forcing him to commence treatment again.

"He was diagnosed with brain cancer -fourth level in April 2023. Because of the stage of the cancer, the doctors recommended that he goes for an immediate surgery and the family having explored other options, he was taken to Germany. The tumour was removed and he was in Germany until July 2023," Nyongesa stated.

"In April 2024, it was discovered that the tumour had recurred and because of that he went to Germany for a second operation. He was there until August 2024. In December 2024, it was discovered that the tumour had recurred again and he was in hospital until early January."

Days Leading to Death

According to the family spokesperson, Chebukati had gone to hospital for his routine checkup on February 12.

Doctors then put him in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The former IEBC chair died while receiving treatment in the ICU.

As detailed by the spokesperson, Chebukati suffered a cardiac arrest before his death on February 20 at 11:35 pm after several attempts to resuscitate him.

"He went to hospital on February 12 and the doctors were of the view that he needed to be admitted. He had some problems with his chest.

"On February 15, he was taken to ICU until February 20 when the doctors informed the family that he had suffered a cardiac arrest."

Chebukati will be buried on March 8 at his farm in Kitale.
