The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has raised alarm over a sharp rise in the number of malaria cases reported at the Kakuma refugee camp this year.
IRC has said they were extremely concerned over the rise in the malaria cases with the numbers tripling for the months of July and August 2020 when compared to the situation in 2019.
Kakuma refugee camp is located in the North-western region of Kenya and has been operational since 1982.
According to IRC, there were 5,080 malaria cases in Kakuma refugee camp during the months of July and August 2019. This number has since tripled over the same period this year pointing to adverse effects of the pandemic on vulnerable communities.
"In the six weeks to August 23, the IRC recorded 13,898 cases. We are concerned," IRC told Telegraph.
