The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a six-month free training program for Kenyan youth who have completed the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

In an announcement on Tuesday, March 11, KeNHA said the program is aimed to support unemployed youth in enhancing their skills, which will help them secure work thereafter.

“The objective of the program is to support capacity development process during the project period that will assist the unemployed youth enhance their skills to secure gainful work thereafter.

"The program is also aimed at building the economic capabilities of the youth through self-development and improvement of skills to enhance the country’s technical skills among the youth,” KeNHA stated.

The training program will be conducted at the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic (KCNP), Mazeras Youth Polytechnic (MYP), and Mariakani Vocational Training Centre (MVTC).

Courses offered at KNCP include; Electrical Installation, Plumbing, Masonry, Carpentry, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Welding and Fabrication, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, and Dressmaking and Tailoring.

The Mazeras Youth Polytechnic will offer training in Electrical Installation and Electronics Technology, Carpentry, Metal Processing Technology, Fashion Design and Dressmaking, Masonry, Plumbing, Hairdressing, and Beauty Therapy.

The Mariakani Vocational Training Center will on the other hand provide training in Computer Operation, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Tailoring, Dressmaking, Electrical Wiring, Welding (Electric Arc), General Fitting, Light Vehicle Mechanics, Plumbing and Pipe Fitting, and Masonry.

To join the training program, one must be of the age of between 18 and 35, have at least a KCPE certificate with no formal training at Diploma level or above, be able to read and write and be a resident of Jomvu, Kinango, Kaloleni, and Rabai.

KeNHA noted that priority will be given to orphaned youth or those from single-parenthood families, young single mothers who meet the quali¬fications, applicants who are categorized as persons living with disability, applicants from low-income families, and those living in informal settlements.

The authority’s scholarship will include; tuition and examination fees, material requirements for the courses, and monthly subsistence allowance for each bene¬ficiary.

To apply for the training program, download the application form from the KeNHA website or obtain hard copies from the KeNHA Coast Regional Offices in Mombasa.

The applications must be stamped by the Area Chief or Assistant County Commissioner as a verification of the applicant’s residence in the target sub-counties.
