The death of a Nigerian TikTok content moderator in Kenya has raised questions surrounding her demise.

As reported by CNN journalist Larry Madowo, Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi was found dead at her house near Nairobi on Friday, March 7.

It was reported that her body was discovered after she failed to show up at her workplace, Teleperformance, for three days.

According to reports, the deceased had become frustrated after failing to get some time off to reunite with her family in Nigeria.

It was noted that the content moderator had not been able to go back to Nigeria after she landed the job in Kenya, further raising questions about the work culture at the company that was outsourced to moderate TikTok content.

"A Nigerian TikTok content moderator was found dead in Kenya. Coworkers claim she had been denied leave several times, but her employer - Teleperformance - denies it," Madowo wrote.

"Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi’s family had not seen her since she came to Nairobi in 2022 and are desperate for answers."

At the time of publication, the cause of death was yet to be revealed to the public.

Notably, social media content moderation companies have been in the spotlight in recent years over their working conditions.

In 2023, some employees who were moderating content for TikTok in Kenya threatened to sue TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, over alleged mistreatment of employees.

At the center of the demand letter to ByteDance were allegations that the workers were not getting enough counselling after being subjected to graphic content.
