The Scrap Metal Council (SMC) has announced the automation of the import and export permit application process for scrap metal consignments.
In a statement on Tuesday, March 11, SMC said the system is set to go live on Saturday, March 15, marking a major milestone in the regulation of the scrap metal trade.
"The Scrap Metal Council (SMC) in collaboration with the Kenya Trade Network Agency (KenTrade) wishes to notify all our stakeholders of the automation of Imports/Exports processes of Scrap Metal Consignments effective Saturday March 15, 2025," the statement read.

According to SMC, the initiative aims to streamline the sector, enhance transparency, and prevent illegal scrap metal trading.
"The automation is designed to ensure smooth and efficient cross-border scrap metal trading. Upon registration and licensing by the Scrap Metal Council, dealers shall be required to apply for Export/Import permits through the Trade Facilitation Platform," the statement added.
To facilitate the transition, KenTrade will conduct refresher training on the automated processes and clearance protocols.
"Re-fresher training on the automated processes and clearance protocols on the Trade Facilitation Platform will be conducted by KenTrade upon request via e-mail or call," the statement further read.
