In 2024, the Senator even called for the replacement of Gachagua as a running mate in 2027.

Murang'a Senator Joe Nyutu has explained why he changed his mind about opposing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking during an interview on Thursday, March 13, Nyutu acknowledged that he was one of the fierce critics of Gachagua while he was in office.

The Senator revealed that his change of heart was influenced by a meeting he had with Gachagua.

According to the UDA Senator, the former DP approached all Senators from Mt Kenya and detailed some of the troubles he was facing in the government.

"I was among the people who were the first to criticise him but that does not mean that I should remain in that team forever. There is a meeting he convened for Senators from the region and he told us how he was being frustrated by his boss," he stated.

"He told us that some of our constituents were being fired from government and were being replaced. He told us that he was the only voice who was fighting for the region. That was my Damascus moment."

Nyutu was among the first Mt Kenya leaders who criticised Gachagua openly.

Notably, in 2024, the Senator even proposed for President Wiliam Ruto to change Gachagua as a running mate in 2027.

"I would want President William Ruto to win again, and I wouldn't want to see him encounter any difficulties. If Ruto wants to win the 2027 elections, he needs to go with the most popular running mate.

"MP Ndindi Nyoro is more popular than DP Rigathi Gachagua on the ground," the Senator stated then.
