Assembly Shoots Down BBI Bill

Elgeyo Marakwet Assembly has joined the list of counties that have voted against the Building Bridges (BBI) Bill.

The county on Tuesday, March 2 2021 became the third to shoot down the BBI constitutional amendment Bill.

During the vote, 17 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted no while 15 supported the motion.

So far Baringo, Nandi, and Elgeyo Marakwet have voted against the constitutional amendment Bill while 40 others have approved it.

Kenya will head to a referendum as early as June this year after the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Tuesday reached the 24-county constitutional threshold required.

Referendum Campaigns

The BBI secretariat announced the next phase of the BBI, key among them being countrywide campaigns to sell the referendum message.

“From March 1, we are rolling out countrywide tours to take BBI to the people. With all the signs that the assemblies will pass the document by a big number, we will be rolling out grand plans to tell the people what is in the document and counter any propaganda out there,” National Assembly minority whip Junet Mohamed said.

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi said that the BBI Bill will take as short as three weeks, meaning the House will be done with it by end of March.

Once the two House make their decision, the Speakers will communicate to the President.

The President receives the document and then send his message to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to hold a referendum.
