Beyond Haiti, Ruto updated Guterres on Kenya’s involvement in peace initiatives in the eastern DRC.

President William Ruto held a phone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday evening, April 3.

In a statement, Ruto said they discussed key global security concerns including the situation in Haiti and efforts to restore peace in eastern DRC.

He noted that Guterres acknowledged Kenya’s role in Haiti and the country’s commitment to stabilizing the Caribbean nation.

"I held a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during which we discussed the UN’s continued support for the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti. He acknowledged Kenya’s leadership role and commended our steadfast commitment to our shared goal of restoring stability in Haiti," he said 

Beyond Haiti, Ruto also updated Guterres on Kenya’s involvement in peace initiatives in the eastern DRC.

"I also briefed him on our ongoing efforts to advance peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. I highlighted the outcomes of the recent joint East African Community–Southern African Development Community summit, which built on previous initiatives and endorsed a clear roadmap with immediate, medium, and long-term actions," he added.

Ruto urged the UN to support the EAC-SADC regional efforts in implementing the roadmap for peace in eastern DRC.

"I called on the UN to support the joint EAC-SADC regional efforts in implementing the roadmap for peace in eastern DRC.

"Additionally, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to regional peace, security, and sustainable conflict resolution, emphasising the importance of continued collaboration between the United Nations and regional initiatives," the statement concluded.

At the same time, Ruto held a telephone conversation with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, discussing regional peace and stability.

"We continue to strengthen our diplomatic and economic ties with Somalia through enhanced cooperation in trade and security. I held a telephone conversation with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, during which we reaffirmed our shared commitment to promoting regional peace and stability for the mutual benefit of our two nations.

"Our discussion underscored the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing common security challenges, including the fight against terrorism, which threaten both regional and global peace," Ruto said.
