Former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala has slammed First lady Rachel Ruto over her silence amid the Butere Girls’ Echoes Of War play controversy.
Speaking on Sunday, April 13, Malala said the First Lady, who is an alumnus of Butere Girls, should speak out on the matter.
The former Kakamega senator questioned whether Mama Rachel would ever speak up if she remained silent when her former school was being intimidated.
“If I were in the government, I would ask William Ruto to be a father to these children. You cannot use force, dictatorship, and intimidation on our children. Before I talk to William Ruto, I would use Mama Rachel Ruto to step into this because she is an old girl, the patron of the alumni association of Butere Girls.
“If you cannot speak when your own school is being disadvantaged, intimidated, and teargassed, when will you speak, Mama Rachel Ruto? We need to hear your voice as a mother,” said Malala.

At the same time, Malala dismissed claims by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba that the script of the controversial play was altered.
He argued that the play was given a green light by adjudicators appointed by the Ministry of Education.
"I wrote this script and I made a commitment even to the cast that I am going to give them a full script, and we will do very minimal changes. We had 9 adjudicators appointed by the Ministry of Education, they gave it a green light and said this was a wonderful script,” Malala added.
Butere Girls has dominated news and social media debate in the few days after they declined to perform their play during the National Drama Festivals in Nakuru County.
The students lamented the arrest of Malala, who wrote the play, and harassment from police officers.
