According to the Vatican, Pope Francis will be buried on Saturday, April 26.

The Vatican has revealed that Pope Francis requested to be buried at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis wrote his last wishes on June 29, 2022, when he sensed that his death was nearing.

In the last testament, he explained that he chose the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major because he entrusted his ministry to Mary, the mother of Jesus.

"I wish my final earthly journey to end precisely in this ancient Marian sanctuary, where I would always stop to pray at the beginning and end of every Apostolic Journey, confidently entrusting my intentions to the Immaculate Mother, and giving thanks for her gentle and maternal care," the Pope wrote.

Additionally, he instructed that his burial place be simple and without any decorations.

The head of the Catholic Church also requested that the word - Franciscus - be inscribed on the tomb.

"The cost of preparing the burial will be covered by a sum provided by a benefactor, which I have arranged to be transferred to the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major. I have given the necessary instructions regarding this to Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, Extraordinary Commissioner of the Liberian Basilica," read the last wishes in part.

Earlier, the Vatican had revealed that Pope Francis died after suffering a stroke on Easter Monday morning. It was revealed that Pope Francis went into a coma after suffering from a stroke.

Ultimately, this led to an irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.

Following the publication of the cause of death, the Vatican announced that the head of the Catholic church would be buried on Saturday, April 26.

Pope Francis died at his residence at the Vatican at the age of 88 years.
