President William Ruto has directed the National Police Service (NPS) to conduct a thorough investigation into the fatal shooting of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were.
In a statement via X on Thursday, May 1, President Ruto stated that people behind the MP’s death must be held accountable.
The Head of State also condoled with Were’s family and constituents of Kasipul for their loss.
“May God grant the family and the people of Kasipul strength to bear with the loss of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were. We urge the police to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident. Those responsible must be held to account,” Ruto stated.
Were was shot on Thursday, April 30, by unknown gunmen at a traffic light on Ngong Road near the City Mortuary roundabout.

The ODM MP had come from Parliament and was seated on the passenger's side of his Toyota Crown car, which was targeted by the assailant, who was driven to the scene by a motorbike.
The attackers disembarked from the motorbike and shot Were at close range in what the police have described as a targeted and premeditated attack.
The driver of the car and a male passenger who escaped the shooting incident unhurt rushed Were to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
“According to reports confirmed by the Nairobi Regional Police Commander, at around 7:30 pm this evening, a white Toyota Crown vehicle came to a stop at a red traffic light on Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout.
“Eyewitnesses have indicated that a motorcycle carrying a rider and a pillion passenger stopped alongside the car. The pillion passenger approached the vehicle and fired shots at the passenger side before jumping back onto the motorcycle and speeding away,” NPS said in a statement.
NPS also noted that investigations into the killing of the Kasipul lawmaker have been launched and vowed to ensure the matter is constructively probed.
Were had claimed that his life was in danger, two months before he was fatally shot along Ngong Road.
In February 2024, the MP expressed concern over the rising incidents of violence in his constituency, claiming that the violence was being perpetuated by goons who were not residents.
Were alleged that the goons were brought into the constituency from Kisumu and Migori counties.
