Charles Were was fatally shot on Wednesday evening along Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout.

CCTV footage has revealed the last moments of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Were before he was fatally shot.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Thursday, May 1, pieced together Were’s final hours using surveillance footage and zeroed in on a suspect who was captured trailing the MP.

According to the investigators, Were left the parliament buildings at around 7 p.m. on Wednesday and was accompanied by his driver and bodyguard.

His Toyota Crown vehicle was seen driving towards City Hall Way before taking a turn onto Wabera Street, where it stopped briefly.

Were’s bodyguard then alighted, walking into an M-Pesa shop along Wabera Street and deposited Ksh20,000 into the MP’s phone.

CCTV footage in the street captured a hooded man carrying a bag and monitoring the MP’s vehicle.

At around 7:19 PM, the MP's vehicle left Wabera Street and headed towards Kenyatta Avenue before the driver changed route and joined Ralph Bunche Road to avoid traffic before joining Argwings Kodhek Road.

The MP and his team were then caught in a traffic snarl-up along Valley road, with the suspect who was seen monitoring them in Wabera street trailing them again on a sports bike.

When the MP's vehicle stopped at a red light, the gunman disembarked from the bike, walked up to the car, and fired four shots through the passenger window at close range.

The attacker then sprinted back to the bike, which sped off towards the Nairobi CBD.

Were’s bodyguard, who was seated behind in the vehicle, told detectives that he took cover before alighting to pursue the gunman but found he had already vanished.

The Kasipul MP, who was shot on the chest and hand, was rushed to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Detectives who visited the scene of the crime on Thursday recovered three spent cartridges, which will be subjected to ballistic examination.

The sleuths have also recorded statements of Were’s driver and bodyguard and the M Pesa attendant along Wabera Street.

President Ruto, in a statement on Thursday, directed the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the Were’s murder and ensure those behind it are brought to book.

“May God grant the family and the people of Kasipul strength to bear with the loss of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were. We urge the police to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident. Those responsible must be held to account,” Ruto said.
